Design approach
Concept
A collection of two hundred poems and short stories about a life and the people in it. The image does the whole job: a skeleton kneeling with an armful of fresh flowers, the only colour on an otherwise black cover.
Texture and typography
The ground is burnt and curled paper photographed on black, which gives the surface texture without adding a single graphic element. The title is set quietly in a light serif at the top, with the author’s name running vertically at the edge, so nothing competes with the figure.
Back cover
The back mirrors the front at a smaller scale: the same figure reduced, a short note from the author with her photograph, and the same torn frame. The spine carries the figure again, so the book is recognisable closed on a shelf.
